Brindavan is on the route of
a number of bangalore city and outstation buses. The road or train journey takes about 75 minutes. The airport is 10 Km away from Brindavan.DHARMARAYA TEMPLE
located in Nagarathpet, this temple has two exceptionally fine images, of Dharmaraja, hero of the epic 'Mahabharata" and of Lord Krishna. The temple is also well known for the annual "Karaga" festival.
GAVI GANGADESHWARA TEMPLE
Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, the temple was built by Kempegowda, founder of Bangalore. This temple, located near Basavanagudi is well known for its architecture & a rare phenomenon.
INTENATIONAL SOCIETY FOR KRISHNA CONSCIOUSNESS (ISKCON)
Sri Radha Krishnachandra temple and cultural complex, is set on a seven acre hillock. ISKCON'S global project to commemorate the birth centennial of founder Srila Prabhupada is built in a Neo - Classical style, combined with traditional elements of temple architecture and high - utilities. Ornamental arches and illuminated water cascades lead to an elaborately decorated Rajagopuram. There is a unique open air amphittheatre for concerts and festivals. The four temple 'gopurams' are connected by a stunning glazed glass canopy which forms the main 'Hari Naam Kirtan' hall of 10,000 square feet. The hall has ceiling paintings. There are also Vedic museums and walk through exhibit areas, a lecture hall with multiple language translation system and landscaped gardens. The main attraction is ISKCON Vedic Theatre, the first multimedia Vedic show.
BULL TEMPLE
The temple built in the Dravidian style, by Kempegowda, founder of Bangalore, it has a monolithic bull 4.5 metres high and 6.5 metres long. The Nandi Bull is revered as the ' vahana ' (vehicle) of Lord Shiva. The temple was supposedly built to appease a bull devouring all the groundnut grown in the area. The bull stopped inflicting damage and the thankful farmers held a groundnut fair near the temple premises which continues even today!
RAMAKRISHNA MATH
Citizens of Bangalore who met Swami Vivekananda in 1905 set up a ' Vedanta Society'. Swami Ramakrishnananda, a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna established a permanent center for the Ramakrishna order in the Basavanagudi area. The math was completed in 1909. The Holy Mother Sri Sharada Devi, stayed here for nine days in 1911. The activities of the Math include daily worship of Sri Ramakrishna, devotional singing, religious discourses, publication of religious books and a public library.
SHANKAR MATH
The expansive Math building, built in 1911, was declared open by Lord Harding, Viceroy of India, in the presence of the Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Sringeri and the Maharaja of Mysore. This math is located near Basavanagudi locality and is 2 km from city market area.
VISHWA SHANTHI ASHRAM
Built in 1996, the Ashram has nine statues of the Hindu gods, Surya, Chandra, Budhu, Shukra, Mangala, Guru, Shani, Rahu and Kethu. The giant Vishwa Roopa Vijaya Vittala statue stands outside the Ashram.
RAGI GUDDA TEMPLE Established over ten years ago in Jayanagar 9th block, this famous temple houses the idol of Anjaneya, Lord Rama's loyal and faithful aide. Today the temple trust also runs a school on the premises.
SRINIVASA PRASANNA VENKATARAMANASWAMY TEMPLE
MaharChikkadevaraya Wodeyar built this temple some 300 years ago, next to Tipu Sultan's palace. Built in fine Dravidian style, the pillars still bear the imprint of the cannon balls which ruined portions of the temple during the third Mysore War(1790 - 92)
KADU MALLIKARJUNASWAMY TEMPLE
Built in one of the oldest areas of Bangalore, Malleswaram, the temple was built on a hillock. The story behind the temple is that the property belonged to the King Shivaji's step-brother Venkoji who came upon a ' shivalingam ' in 1669 and consecrated the temple around it.
MOSQUES
JUMMA MASJID (Cantonment) The oldest mosque in Cantonment area, it is a brick and mortar structure, with ornate jali-work and floral motifs in plaster on the facade.
JUMMA MASJID (City Market)
A white marble structure, is the most recent and beautiful mosque, designed by Rayyaz Asifuddin from Hyderabad. The foundation stone was laid by Sir Mirza Imail, Dewan of Mysore. The masjid can accomodate 5000 people for offering prayers.
CHURCHES
ST. MARY'S BASILICA
A small chapel was the original structure built by Abbe Dubois, French missionary. The present structure was built in 1875-1882. The interior is remarkable with pointed windows with stained glass, multiple columns with rich Corinthian capital supporting stately arches. In september each year, lakhs of devotees, dressed in orange, gather here to celebrate St.Mary's Feast, for worship and weddings.
INFANT JESUS CHURCH
The church has had a long history of sacrifice and devotion from the time it was first conceived by Rev.Dr.Lourduswamy, the then archbishop of Bangalore, with absolutely nothing to get started. It was Fr.L.Peter who set out on a daunting mission to establish the church on a firm footing. Persisting faith and courage prevailed and finally the present church was opened in the year 1979, despite gruelling obstacles. The most noticeable feature of the church is the secular nature of the devotees.
ST.MARKS CATHEDRAL Built in 1808 and enlarged in 1901, for army personal and civilians who had moved in from Srirangapatna. Modelled on St.Paul's cathedral of the 17th century.
ST.PATRICK'S CHURCH
Gail-Hot , military chaplain, built the original church in 1841, which was again rebuilt in 1894. The church is one of the most prestigious ones, and is an important place for worship and weddings.
HOLY TRINITY CHURCH
This beautiful landmark at the east end of the M.G.Road was built in 1848-51. This structure is built in the English Renaissance style. This church can accomodate 700 people and is regarded as the largest "millitary" church in Southern India.
