volunteer-patients even averted bypass surgery, which they had been advised before joining the lifestyle program. This program should be called the science and the art of living, points out Dr Vimal Chhajer, assistant professor in the department of physiology at AIIMS and involved in the project. A part from scientific education is about stress management Preksha meditation, Kayotsarg, some yogic postures, vegetarianism and unique lifestyle were also taught. An international conference on lifestyle and health has been planed in January at the AIIMS where many renowned scientists from the USA and other countries are expected to practice. The importance of such a life style program can be gauged from the fact that more and more people show signs of stress and subsequently develop heart diseases. The project is being carried out, in the scientific terms, is called randomized controlled trial - where 93 patients completed the three month follow-up. Later, they were divided into two groups, those which entered the yogic lifestyle program, subsequently showed tremendous improvement. THE ROAD BACK TO A HEALTHY HEART Cardiovascular disease, most commonly known as heart disease, the number one killer all over the world. It takes more lives than all other causes of death together - including cancer, AIDS, accidents etc. The accumulation of fatty plaque on the inner walls of the blood vessels which starts early in childhood increase gradually throughout the life due to high-fat and high-protein diet. This leads to loss of elasticity of the blood vessels making them susceptible to rupture due to high blood pressure and cause stroke. When a diet is not rich in fats and protein, the high blood pressure will be non-existent. High blood pressure and heart disease could be prevented by certain dietary approaches. Although medical and surgical procedures like bypass surgery, angioplasty etc relieve symptoms, it shows little or no improvement in the life span of the patient. There is also the risk of arteries clogging up again. Women are more prone to risk of death during surgery than men. Besides, other complications may also arise. A large percentage of people suffer permanent brain damage of various degrees due to lack of oxygen to brain surgery. Hence surgical methods are fraught with danger and an element of risk inevitable. There are several nutritional approaches, which are safe, inexpensive and effective, in sharp contract to conventional allopathic methods. Well-informed physicians in this country and abroad have been prescribing very low fat diet for years to reduce cardiovascular diseases. Recently it received large publicity due to documentary evidence adduced on the effectiveness of this approach as revealed in the studies conducted by Dean Orinch M.D, of University of California, San Francisco. His dietary regimen combines a plant-based zero cholesterol diet with exercise and stress management. He has shown that blockages in blood vessels could be effectively reversed and improvement brought about to most severely blocked arteries by following the dietary regimen. His work is extremely important in the sense that it has changed conventional thinking on heart disease. Some of his important findings are: Age is not a factor for reversal, even the aged people showed impressive improvement. There is no need to lower their cholesterol to below 159 to get reversal Even arteries, which have been clogged for years, can open up. The most significant fact is that now we know that heart disease is both preventive and reversible. High-tech methods with new drugs and surgical techniques only reduce symptoms. They do not reverse or remove the arterosclerotic blood vessel. Only a plant-based cardiac reversal diet can do that. Apart from complete dietary changes, fasting has proved to be highly effective in such cases as Rheumatoid Arthritis, as has been revealed in various scientific programs.
