Rajasthan is a dry land. Colors and festivals therefore form an integral part of its culture. People of a number of castes and subgroups inhabit Rajasthan and each village and caste has its own set of customs and festivals, its own culture and rhythm.
Festivals common to most of these subgroups include Gangaur and Teej. Both are women-oriented festivals and men traditionally have had little role to play in the celebrations. This is attributed to the fact that men in Rajasthan were at most times away from their homes, the men from the Rajput communities in wars, and those in the business communities and the labor classes in bigger towns looking for better opportunities. Women handled the household and all activities in the domestic and social setup. Both Gangaur and Teej mark a change in season and therefore in food habits; the need for the change in food habits probably accounts for the origin of the festivals, since Rajasthan is prone to extreme conditions, and suitable diet changes are of the utmost importance. Moreover, in the absence of the men of the household, these festivals became an excuse for women to remember them and to pray for them.
The following is a list of festivals in Rajasthan, with patterns of observance being mainly Marwari, observed among Rajputs and Jats of Rajasthan.

One of the famous festivals of Rajasthan is the Kite Festival. Its a one of a kind festival. Click here to read more...
