According
to Mahaveera, there is no God as creator of the universe.
The world has never been created and has neither a beginning
nor an end. Godhood consists in freedom from attachment and
aversion, which is achieved by destruction of ignorance and
knowledge-obscuring karmas. This was a very bold assertion
on the part of Mahaveera, who himself achieved the highest
status of God Jina by his own strenuous efforts. In Dashavaikalik
Sutra it is said. "Dharma, the law consists of non-violence,
restraint and austerity and even the gods revere him who abides
by this las". Mahaveera said that non-violence cannot be practised
without self-restraint and austerity.
In to-day's strife-torn society when moral values have so
degenerated that man has become self-centered, the teachings
of Mahaveera have special relevance to make our life more
human, more purposeful and completely peaceful. The ever vibrant
slogan of Jain community "Parasparapargraho Jivanam" which
means that all living creatures (man, animals and plant life)
are dependent upon each other and must live in co-existence
with nature. That is the way to get real peace and harmony
in the world.
Thus Spoke the Lord
- Humility
is the fondation of Dharma.
- Non-violence
is eternal religion.
- Pride,
anger, carelessness, illness and idleness are the five
obstacles in the path of acquiring knowledge.
- Company
of the wise enhances one's wisdom but the company of wicked
distorts one's understanding.
- By
service a person acquires the meritorious karmas which
bring about for him the form (Nama) and status (Gotra)
of a Tirthankara.
- Forgiveness,
contentment, simplicity and modesty- these form the four
gateways of righteousness.
- Lord
Jina has said that knowledge, faithe, conduct and austerity
constitute the path of liberation.
- Anger
spoils good relations, pride destroys modesty, deceit
destroys amity (friendship) and greed destroys everything.
- Conquer
anger by forgiveness, pride by humility, deceit by straight-forwardness
and greed by contentment.
- Desires
are boundless like the sky., it is impossible to fulfill
all of them.
- An
indolent person can never be happy and a lethargic person
can never acquire knowledge. A person with attachments
cannot acquire renunciation and one who has a violent
attitude cannot be compassionate.
- A
self-restrained aspirant eats, drinks and talks less.
- Truth
is God.
- That
speech is proper which is beneficial, moderate, measured
and affable.
- Deception,
fraud, lies and malpractices in trade-these are the four
animal instincts.
- Simplicity,
humility, compassion and serenity-these are the four human
instincts.
- No
task daunts the courageous.
- O
Man ! be not careless even for a while.
- What
you desire for yourself desire for others too; what you
do not desire for your self, do not at all desire for
others too.
- Live
and let live
- O
Man ! always be vigilant. He who is vigilant gains more
and more knowledge.
- It
is not possible to get opportunity for enlightenment again
and again.
- Victory
over one's self is greater than conquering lakhs of enemies
on the battle-field.
- He
who scorns others wanders aimlessly in the cycle of births.
- To
treat as equal a piece of straw and gold, a friend and
a foe, this is what constitutes Samayika (equanimity).
- By
learning, one acquires knowledge and gets concentration
of mind.
I
forgive all living beings, may all living beings forgive me.
"I cherish friendliness towards all and harbour enimity towards
none".
