Date: Sat 25th
Jan 03
Time: 7.00 p.m.
Venue: Auditorium,
Alliance Française de Bangalore
ÂDi Théàtre, the
theatre group of Alliance Française de Delhi presents ‘The
Ruins of the Mid-Air Castles’, conceived and directed by S.
Somasundaram and ‘Condemned to die’ (Le dernier jour d'un
condamné) by Victor Hugo, adaptation: Patrick Beck, directed
by S. Somasundaram. Condemned to die, deals with the torment
of death of penalty. A prison cell - one actor on stage: the
prisoner. He does not utter a word for the whole duration of
the play. He lives the last moments of his life thinking about
his imminent execution. His movements are accompanied by a
voice over, a narration full with music and sound effects. The
narration is an adaptation from the short novel of Victor Hugo
"Le dernier jour d'un condamné". Ruins of Mid-Air Castles -
The living room of a middle class family in Delhi, at the eve
of the assassination of the then Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira
Gandhi. It is a family where nobody gets along with each
other. Everything is therefore "normal" till the news of the
assassination arrives. Riots break out in the city. The
set is a transparent wall at the backdrop through which the
street scenes are depicted through the effect of Chinese
shadow. This is a wordless play without being a mime show.
