Somasundaram and ‘Condemned to die’ (Le dernier jour d'un condamné) by Victor Hugo, adaptation: Patrick Beck, directed by S. Somasundaram. Condemned to die, deals with the torment of death of penalty. A prison cell - one actor on stage: the prisoner. He does not utter a word for the whole duration of the play. He lives the last moments of his life thinking about his imminent execution. His movements are accompanied by a voice over, a narration full with music and sound effects. The narration is an adaptation from the short novel of Victor Hugo "Le dernier jour d'un condamné". Ruins of Mid-Air Castles - The living room of a middle class family in Delhi, at the eve of the assassination of the then Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. It is a family where nobody gets along with each other. Everything is therefore "normal" till the news of the assassination arrives. Riots break out in the city.  The set is a transparent wall at the backdrop through which the street scenes are depicted through the effect of Chinese shadow. This is a wordless play without being a mime show. Entry Free

VIDEO PRESENTATIONS
FOLK PERFORMING ARTS TRADITIONS

Kathakar, the theatre club of Alliance Française de Bangalore brings to you two presentations of traditional Indian performing arts forms. It is said that all performing arts evolved from the sharing of community experiences in a spiritual mould. There are numerous indigenous folk forms still prevalent in most parts of India.

Pabuji nu Pard (video)

Date: Mon 13th Jan 03

Vijay Padaki, from Kathakar, will present a video film on a storytelling tradition of Rajasthan and North Gujarat that is called Pabuji nu Pard, or the epic tales of Pabuji. The pard (or phad) is the hand painted back cloth that includes all the characters and events in the tale to be told. The video film captures the totality of this folk tradition, from preparation to performance.

Teyyam and Bhuta (slide show and presentation)

Date: Tue 14th Jan 03

Teyyam of Kerala and Bhuta of Tulunadu are exceptionally colourful folk ritual peformances in which the performer, apart from being a priest with occult and mystical powers, is also a dancer, musician, actor and choreographer, incorporating in himself the artistic skills of crafts, decoration and painting. The presentation will be illustrated with rare slides documented as a part of an extensive research programme by Balan Nambiar, well known personality in the art circles of Bangalore.
